Pdf Summary
This webinar argues that legacy fundraising is a major opportunity, but the field has traditionally been too narrow, too one-on-one, and not scalable enough to include many potential donors. With a massive wealth transfer, an aging donor base, and shrinking numbers of donors, organizations need a new approach.

The speakers frame legacy giving as deeply human rather than purely financial. A bequest is presented as an expression of identity, meaning, memory, and the desire to leave a lasting impact. Instead of focusing only on wealth and capacity, fundraisers should recognize loyalty, shared values, long-term engagement, volunteering, and even small or lapsed gifts as signs of legacy potential. In this view, “your next legacy donor is probably already in your database.”

A key shift is from seeing fundraisers as “gift planners” to “stewards of meaning.” Organizations are encouraged to invite donors to share memories, stories, and reflections through newsletters, surveys, and conversations. These questions help donors connect their giving to their life experiences and values.

The presentation also argues that legacy fundraising should not be treated as a one-time campaign. Instead, it should be an inclusive, consistent system of communication that keeps the organization top of mind when donors eventually update their wills. The message is that legacy giving is part of a lifelong relationship, not the end of it.

Overall, the webinar calls for democratizing donor relationships by making legacy giving accessible to more people and by helping donors complete the story of their lives through charitable giving.
