Video Summary
The webinar, “Critical Relationships in Planned Giving,” explored how successful gift planning depends on more than just donor contact. Rebecca Rothy defined a critical relationship as one that is essential to completing, or potentially blocking, a gift. She organized the discussion into three areas: external relationships, internal relationships, and the gift officer’s relationship with self.

Externally, she emphasized understanding donors as part of a larger matrix of influences, including family, friends, pets, hobbies, faith communities, and professional advisors. Gift officers should use discovery visits to learn values, motivations, and the people who shape a donor’s decisions. Rebecca stressed that advisors—financial planners, attorneys, accountants, trust officers—can either support or hinder philanthropy, so it is important to know how they view charitable giving and to build relationships with them when possible.

Internally, she focused on the importance of organizational support. Planned giving staff need buy-in from management, finance, legal, coworkers, and other colleagues. She recommended using data and storytelling to demonstrate program value, and noted that internal culture, policies, and advocates can significantly affect success. She also highlighted the need to understand institutional standards and ethics.

Finally, Rebecca discussed self-awareness. Gift officers must bring authenticity, humility, and boundaries to their work. She encouraged using coaches, mentors, and self-reflection to build skills and respond well to challenges. Her closing message was that planned giving is deeply relational, rewarding not only because of the gifts completed, but because of the human connections and personal growth it fosters.
